The Journey through MouseHunt

MouseHunt Logo

If you are thinking about the movie “Mousehunt” you are wrong, this blog is about the Facebook application called “Mousehunt” which has become a popular game among many thousands of Facebook users. Facebook applications sprout like mushrooms and become popular very quickly and just as fast as they became popular they die out. But this creative game by “HitGrab” has been on facebook for almost 2 years now, and still is been played by more than 40,000 users at any given moment of time. Mousehunt is a passive game where you bait the trap with cheese and then can check back every 15 minutes. This is great if you are doing some monotonous work and need a break from time to time.

It was only a couple of month’s back that I started playing this game on Facebook, and now I’m an avid player of this game. Many of my friends ask what is it makes you play this game? Well, what makes me play this is game is certainly not the gameplay. As any browser based game there is hardly anything that you can consider as game play, there is nothing interesting about clicking a picture/button which they call it “Sounding the Horn”. The interesting part of the game is the anticipation of catching a new mouse and the anticipation of what the next mouse is going to be. The game has 140 breeds of mice, and each mouse breed has a lovely 2D picture illustrating it. Encountering new mice as you progress through the game is the main interesting feature of this game to me. Also the mouse traps illustrated in the game are very creative. One of my friends asked if the game actually shows you how the mouse is caught with the trap, and when I said no, he was not impressed. But I feel that some Mousehunt players love the fact that they can imagine how the mouse is caught by the trap.

The beginning of this game is a bit tough on the player since you aren’t going to catch many mice with your very feeble mouse trap that have given to you at first and the mice that you catch will not earn you much gold (virtual money from which you can buy new traps and bases for the traps and much more when you advance through the levels). Thankfully there are competitions on the Mousehunt forum which are hosted by high ranked players where beginners can participate and then collect whatever gold that is on offer. This will help you leveling up the ranks faster and making your experience of playing mousehunt that much richer.

Any successful game should have a steady flow of income to the developers. And in mousehunt they have ingeniously created this variety of cheese called “Super|Brie +” which has 99% of attraction for many of the games’ mice. Which guarantees you of attracting 99 mice from 100 times but that doesn’t assure you of catching 99 mice since catching each mouse is decided on the trap setup(includes the trap, the base and the variety of cheese) that you are using. In order to purchase this awesome variety of cheese you need to donate. It is not a necessity to donate in order to progress through the game but it will help progress a lot faster if you donate and use super brie.

Another reason why this game is so successful is that developers do bring new and interesting features and mice from time to time. For example this Christmas (2009) the developers created a new location called the “Festive Comet” and brought new mice and brought new traps and trap bases. Because of introducing new and interesting items mousehunt players are always kept on suspense as to what new stuff will the developer bring in the near future. Here are some new mice introduced in the Christmas season on MouseHunt.

Mousehunt has a whole new virtual world, like the fictional world called “Middle Earth” in Lord of the Rings. Like Middle Earth the Mousehunt world also has a map and as you level up you will be able to uncover new and interesting locations where you will be able to catch new mice.

Hope this gave you a small insight of my favourite game on facebook and inspired you to try out the game. I will be posting on interesting locations and mice that I uncover in the future if time permits.

Thanks for taking the time in reading this post. And thank you very much HitGrab for making this amazing game! Have a nice day!
